R-2800 DOUBLE WASP ENGINE

R-2800 Double Wasp Engine

The Double Wasp, an 18-cylinder, twin-row radial engine with 2,800 cubic inches of displacement, followed the Twin Wasp.

Designed with improved water injection and turbo-supercharging, it produced more than one horsepower per cubic inch of displacement. It became the backbone of the American fighter fleet during World War II, powering the Grumman F6F Hellcat, the Vought F4U Corsair and the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt.
